William McFarland Multiple Myeloma Survivor
William McFarland, who had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2009, visited Tunnell Cancer Center every three weeks for his treatments. Infusion nurse Kathy Dillon, RN, OCN, administered a medication to strengthen his bones. William happened to mention that he and his partner were heading for California.
“I’m from California,” Kathy told him. She recommended places for them to go, including restaurants.
On their trip, William and his partner drove up the coast to San Francisco. When William returned, he and Kathy were connected by their memories of California and the travel experiences they shared—hitting on cruises, out-of-the-way places, and even getaways to New Orleans and Canada.
“The conversations made my treatments go quickly,” William says. “Kathy and all the nurses make it more tolerable. They all are busy but they take the time to stop and say hello to you.”
