Experts in Vascular Disease

Beebe Healthcare offers expertise in vascular disease, including diagnostic testing and surgery. Patients with poor vascular health may experience symptoms such as numbness or tingling, poor circulation, pain in extremities, or changes in skin color. If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider. These symptoms could indicate vascular disease.

Treatment may include medications or lifestyle changes. If your vascular disorder requires surgery, Beebe’s vascular specialists are here for your safe care. Your clinical team will work with you to develop a treatment plan designed to give you the best outcome. Vascular labs are located throughout southern Delaware, making it easy to receive quality diagnostic testing and treatment close to home.

Conditions We Treat

Beebe Healthcare's vascular team works with patients both in the office and in the operating rooms at the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus. Beebe is the home of the only hybrid operating room in Sussex County. This advanced operating theater allows our expert team to take care of patients in a streamlined and efficient way, preventing patients from needing to come to the hospital for multiple appointments.

The most common vascular diseases are:

  • Atherosclerosis (build-up of plaque inside blood vessels)
  • Stroke
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Arteriovenous malformation
  • Critical limb-threatening ischemia
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Hypertension

Beebe Offers Innovative TCAR Program

Beebe Healthcare is among the first in Delaware to treat carotid artery disease and prevent future strokes using an innovative procedure called TransCarotid Artery Revascularization or TCAR. This is a clinically proven, minimally invasive and safe approach for high-risk surgery patients who need carotid artery treatment.

Carotid artery disease is a form of atherosclerosis, caused by a buildup of plaque in the two main arteries in the neck that supply the oxygen-rich blood to the brain. If the buildup becomes too large, it can cut off this important supply of oxygen-rich blood and can cause a stroke.

Commonly Asked Questions

Procedures performed by vascular teams at Beebe include:

  • Lower extremity bypass: This surgical procedure improves circulation in the lower extremities through the creation of a new path for blood to flow around a blockage.
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
  • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Limb salvage revascularization
  • Non-healing foot wound
  • Endovascular stent
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Carotid endarterectomy/stent
  • Trans-carotid artery revascularization (TCAR)

Our vein specialists provide valuable education about your vascular or circulatory system. When you have a vein consultation, you will receive education on the basics of vein health and issues that can occur because of vascular disease or venous insufficiency (decreased blood circulation).

Your vein specialist will also send you for an ultrasound of your veins. The results will be shared with you so you have an idea of any issues that might have been found. If there are areas of concern, your vein specialist will discuss treatment options.

The next step is up to you. If you are not ready to have surgery or a vein procedure, your vein specialist will discuss non-surgical options such as wearing compression stockings, walking more regularly, and reducing salt in your diet.

Hybrid operating rooms are often used by vascular teams, but they can also be used for general surgery, cardiac surgery, and urologists.

Because of the large teams needed in the hybrid OR during a procedure, these operating theaters are often about 500-square-feet larger than a traditional operating room.

Here are some common procedures done in a hybrid OR:

  • Revascularization
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • Vascular intervention
  • Endovascular aneurysm repair
  • Stent graft placement
  • Treatment of congenital heart disease, coronary artery disease
  • Transcatheter valve replacement
  • Laparoscopic procedures such as appendectomy
