Delaware End-of-Life Coalition Honors Beebe Healthcare physician and chaplain with 2015 Excellence Awards

Delaware End-of-Life Coalition recognized Beebe Healthcare’s Physician Advisor Michael Salvatore, MD, FCCP, FACP, and Chaplain Keith Goheen, M.Div., BCC, for making outstanding contributions toward advancing palliative care in Delaware.

At the Coalition’s recent 2015 Excellence Awards ceremony in Dover, End-of-Life Coalition President Keagen Brown, MBA, CPHIMS, presented Dr. Salvatore with the 2015 Physician Excellence Award and Rev. Goheen with the 2015 Counseling Professional Excellence Award. There were a total of six awardees from healthcare settings with acute, long-term, hospice and palliative care.

“We are proud and honored that both Dr. Salvatore and Rev. Goheen have been recognized by this statewide coalition for the care and compassion they provide our patients,” said Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE, President and CEO, Beebe Healthcare. “End of life is a difficult time for patients, their families and friends, their caregivers, and for the Beebe team members who have cared for them. Dr. Salvatore and Rev. Goheen have a great depth of knowledge, understanding and compassion for individuals who are at or near the end of their lives. They are advocates for the patients and have mentored many of our team members dedicated to maintaining the patient’s dignity and compassion during all stages of care. We are fortunate to have both Dr. Salvatore and Reverend Goheen as part of our healthcare team.”

Dr. Michael Salavatore was recognized for his leadership qualities, compassion and knowledge in providing education to end-of-life patients through his role in Case Management and on the Palliative Care Team at Beebe.

He provides education to Beebe case managers on how to advocate for "quality of life" to patients and to give them options, introducing quality care versus always treatment as the best choice. He also recently was recognized as one of our top speakers for the Maryland/Delaware Chapter of the American Case Management Association.

Dr. Salvatore became Physician Advisor in 2012 after working at Beebe for more than 18 years as a pulmonologist and critical care specialist. He is Board Certified in Pulmonology, Critical Care medicine and Sleep Medicine.

Rev. Goheen, who has led Beebe’s Palliative Care Team since 2012, was recognized for his untiring work in assisting hundreds of patients and families in building consensus on medically appropriate and ethically responsive treatment plans. His quiet strength and compassionate manner led to him being described as ‘the rock’ for all in difficult times.

He is known for being available at any hour, day or night, to meet the needs of patients and their families. His strong communication skills promote cooperation in every emotional situation.

Rev. Goheen has made presentations about End-of-Life Care in Millsboro, Bethany Beach, RB and Lewes in the past year.

Rev. Goheen joined Beebe as Chaplain in 2005 and leads its chaplaincy team. He also coordinates the Pastoral Visitors Program, assisting local religious groups who provide religious support to their memberships. He is a Board Certified chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains.
