Beebe Healthcare Invites the Public to the 100th Anniversary Kick-off Celebration and Historic Marker Unveiling September 30

The year 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of Beebe Healthcare, which was founded in the City of Lewes by two local physician brothers Dr. James Beebe, Sr., and Dr. Richard C. Beebe, and which today remains independent as a community-owned, not-for-profit, healthcare system.

To kick off the centennial celebration, the public is invited to the official unveiling and dedication of an historic marker in front of the historic, white Shaw Building located at Beebe’s main campus on Savannah Road in Lewes. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Governor Jack Markell will speak and present a proclamation. Jeffrey M. Fried, President and CEO of Beebe Healthcare, and Judy Aliquo, President and CEO of Beebe Medical Foundation, will present the Beebe family tribute. Members of the State General Assembly, Sen. Ernesto B. Lopez, Rep. Stephen T. Smyk, and Rep. Peter C. Schwarzkopf, will unveil the historic marker. Members of the Cape Henlopen High School Chorale will perform.

Savannah Road will be temporarily closed in front of Beebe as the ceremony takes place so that people enjoy the ceremony and the music and refreshments to follow. Event parking will be available at Cape Henlopen High School and a free shuttle will carry visitors to and from Beebe and parking area.

“This centennial is truly a milestone for Beebe Healthcare, for Lewes, for the Beebe family and all those who have worked and supported the organization, and for the communities that we serve,” says Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE, President and CEO of Beebe Healthcare. “Dr. James Beebe and Dr. Richard Beebe began this hospital with a mission of bringing modern medicine to this area. Theirs was the first hospital in the southern part of Delaware, which was a rural area isolated from large cities. Over the decades, supported by many in our community and throughout Delaware, Beebe has grown and thrived, and today continues to focus on bringing the highest quality care to residents and visitors. We are proud of our founders, of our team members, of our volunteers and supporters, and look forward to the years ahead.”

Events and educational activities will take place throughout 2016. A children’s book will be published and shared with schools and libraries in Delaware. There also will be a full-color, coffee table history book with photography by Kevin Fleming published during the year.
