Weight Loss Surgery Options

Bariatric surgery is recommended for those with a BMI of 40 or higher, or for those who have a BMI of 35 with other health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure. It is for those who have 100 or more pounds to lose. And, for those who have tried and failed at other weight-loss attempts.

Beebe's advanced medical weight loss program offers two main options for weight loss surgery at Beebe.

Gastric Sleeve or Sleeve Gastrectomy

In this procedure, part of the stomach is removed to make it smaller and reduce your meal size. The part that is removed contains hormones that make you hungry. Consequently, after surgery, most patients have appetite suppression. Gastric sleeve surgery is non-reversible.

This surgery takes approximately 30-45 minutes, and is typically a simpler procedure than some other forms of weight loss surgery. Surgeons may recommend gastric sleeve surgery for patients that are at high risk.

Beebe offers laparoscopic or minimally invasive sleeve gastrectomy.

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery is another common bariatric procedure. In gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass), the surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of your stomach. The small intestine is then rerouted to decrease the amount of calories you can absorb. The rerouting of the intestine also promotes satiety and suppresses hunger.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch

This procedure begins with the surgeon performing a sleeve gastrectomy and then rerouting the small bowel to decrease the amount of calories absorbed. This procedure is typically offered to patients with BMI of 50 or more. It is also offered to patients with BMI of 35 or more and history of sleeve gastrectomy.

Duodenal switch may be more effective for individuals with Type 2 diabetes or other health conditions.

Revision Surgery

We offer revision surgery for sleeve and gastric bypass patients to help with more weight loss or to treat heartburn/reflux after surgery.

All bariatric surgeries come with risks, however most patients experience little to no adverse reactions. Your surgeon and primary care provider will determine if you are a candidate for weight loss surgery, and if so, which procedure is best for you.
