Can your legs look better?
Spider veins can be your worst nightmare, especially during bathing suit season. They bulge. They can be sore. They are unsightly.
Spider veins and varicose veins can be harmless, however, if they are affecting your life and your wellbeing, Beebe Vein Center specialists are here to help.
Dr. Sean Ryan, board certified vascular surgeon with Beebe Vein Center, said for many people spider veins and varicose veins are hereditary. Chances are, if your mom had them, you will have them too.
In some cases, spider veins start due to an injury. For example, you might have been hit by a stick during a sporting event when you were in high school and later in life, those pesky spider veins are showing up in the same spot.
In other cases, spider veins and varicose veins start due to your lifestyle. People who smoke, sit or stand for long periods of time, or who are overweight or obese, are more likely to get spider veins.
If you do not have spider veins now and you are 30 or older, your best bet to preventing future spider veins is to maintain your weight. Big weight fluctuations put stress on your body, your skin, and your veins and can cause both spider and varicose veins.
Other prevention methods:
- Drink plenty of water
- Move regularly – this could be as simple as walking every hour
- Avoid crossing your legs or putting too much pressure on your legs when sitting
- When possible, elevate your legs while you are sitting or relaxing.
If you already have spider veins or varicose veins and they are harming your health, Beebe Vein Center can provide a personalized treatment plan during one of the monthly free vein screenings.
