Cancer Survivors

Elaine Coulbourn

As a paraprofessional for Howard T. Ennis working with special education children at Frankford Elementary School, Elaine Coulbourn's focus is on helping others. So when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2007, she kept working as much as she could.

"It was better that I worked. It kept my mind off of the cancer and on the children."

Elaine's mind also was on her own children, and her husband, John, and her friends. "The cancer brought out the best in people. My family—my two sons, Jesse and Jeremy, and my daughter-in-law, Rebecca—and my friends, they all went out of their way to help me. I feel so lucky and I am so grateful to have these people in my life."

John brought her to her treatments and picked up the extra load at home. Having her granddaughter, Jillian, around almost every day made a difference. "The joy and love that she has brought gives me strength and a reason to smile every day," Elaine says.
