John Hayes Neck Cancer Survivor

It's not unusual to see John Hayes riding his bicycle along the narrow streets of Georgetown. "It's not as easy as it used to be, though," says the 91-year-old retiree. "The traffic is getting worse and you have to be so careful."

John was diagnosed with neck cancer in early 2009, 19 years after his son Michael was diagnosed. In June 2009, the two of them walked in the Miracle Mile event, which celebrates cancer survivorship, on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk. He and his wife, Ardis, still practice tai chi and keep in regular touch with their seven children. John writes a newsy family letter each week. That tradition has continued for 35 years.

"We've been married since 1948 and we have concentrated on keeping our family relationship intact and wholesome," he says. "Every day is a blessing."
