Cancer Survivors

Genevieve Hughes

When Genevieve Hughes was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2007, she said it felt as if she were hit by a ton of bricks.

"It was a humbling experience. I have never been sick a day in my life," she says. "I am the one who takes care of everyone else."

Genevieve turned to her husband, John. "He was there for every consult, for every treatment. There should be a special place in heaven for him."

Genevieve says they called a "pow wow" with the family—their two sons, one daughter, and six grandchildren. "We told them what we were going to face. I told them I had a choice and I chose life, no matter how difficult the treatments." Her children also helped her. She adds that the support she received from the congregation of St. George's Episcopal Church on Route 23 "got us through the dark days. I learned that cancer is not a 'me,' it is a 'we.'"
