Endocrinology - Treating Disorders of the Thyroid
Beebe Healthcare offers a continuum of care for patients with endocrine disorders and illnesses related to the thyroid gland. This team of endocrine specialists works closely with primary care physicians in the region.
Endocrinologists are specially trained physicians who diagnose diseases related to the glands, such as menopause, diabetes, metabolic disorders, osteoporosis, thyroid diseases, cancers of the endocrine glands, and more. Meet the Endocrinologists.
Treating Disorders of the Thyroid and Parathyroid
Patients who may be having endocrine system concerns or may have diseases of the thyroid or parathyroid will likely start with their primary care physician. During a scheduled appointment, the patient may mention issues that could be related to the endocrine system. The primary care provider then orders tests.
Once testing is completed and results are returned, the primary care physician may determine that the patient should see a specialist. Beebe Endocrinology will be able to see the patient at one of its two convenient locations – Lewes or Millsboro. One of the Beebe Endocrinology specialists, which include Dr. Carlton Boxhill, Dr. Karen Smith Coleman, and Dr. Samaneh Dowlatshahi, will meet with and evaluate the patient. A course of action would be determined and regular follow-up visits created. In addition to seeing the specialist, the patient will also continue to have appointments and annual exams with the primary care physician.
In some cases, a patient’s symptoms may continue to worsen and Beebe Endocrinology specialists may recommend surgery or a procedure. The patient could be referred to Beebe General Surgery and Dr. Mark Facciolo, a Board Certified General Surgeon with a Special Interest in Endocrine Surgery. He performs open and laparoscopic (minimally invasive) procedures on the endocrine glands, which includes the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Following surgery and follow-up with Dr. Facciolo, the patient will then continue to see Beebe Endocrinology specialists and a primary care provider for regular visits.
Patients should continue regular follow-up visits with primary care and specialists as needed.
