Beebe Healthcare Congratulates the 2015 Nursing Excellence Award Recipients And Celebrates National Nursing Week

Beebe Healthcare congratulates the Nursing Excellence Award recipients and recognizes May 6-12 at National Nurses Week.

Nurses are the lifeblood of a healthcare system in that they have the unique opportunity to touch patients at every level of care.

“Beebe Healthcare is proud to celebrate the role our nurses play in delivering the highest level of quality and patient experience for patients,” said Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE, President & CEO, Beebe Healthcare. “All of us at Beebe recognize the essential role our nurses play in our care delivery system. They are at the bedside 24 hours a day, caring for patients in their homes, working in the physician offices and other ambulatory settings, and engaging individuals through our Population Health efforts to become more involved and responsible for their own health. We couldn’t do what we do each day, caring for our community, without our nurses. Our nurses take great pride in what they do to make Beebe Healthcare the outstanding healthcare system it is today.”

The Nurses Celebrating Nurses Committee presented the Nursing Excellence Awards Saturday, May 2, at Sussex Pines Country Club in Georgetown. The event brought together many of the nursing leaders at Beebe Healthcare.

“I commend you for all you do for Beebe. We know how important your work is,” said Jacquelyn O. Wilson, Ed.D., Vice Chair of the Beebe Healthcare Board of Directors, in the opening remarks at the awards ceremony.

The keynote speaker, Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing graduate Denise Westbrook, Assistant Professor and Dean of the Wilmington University College of Health Professions, talked about the importance of education in nursing.

“I commend each of you for your excellence, commitment, education, and integrity. And, if you’ve come this far, how much farther are you willing to go?” Westbrook asked at the conclusion of her speech.

Award recipients were chosen from nominations submitted earlier this year. Each nominee was scored based on criteria with the final recipient being chosen based on the scoring.

The 2015 Beebe Nursing Excellence Award recipients were:

  • Stephan Betins-Kinnamon, MSed, RN, CNOR, received the Bonnie Austin Nursing Leadership Award
  • Phyllis Saunders, BSN, RN, received the Eleanor Cordrey Nursing Excellence Award
  • Julia Bayne, RN, BA, received the Constance Bushey Nursing Scholarship Award

  • Dianne Bane, RN, ADN, AAS, received the Professional Mentor Nursing Award.

The Bonnie Austin Nursing Leadership Award recognizes nurses who serve as a resource for peers, clinical team members, students, and family members. This nurse fosters collaboration and encourages others to learn and develop professionally. This year’s winner, Stephan Betins-Kinnamon, embraces his role as a leader by consistently stepping forward and working with others, said nominator Theresa Houston, RN, MSN, CCRN, past winner of this award.

“Although not in an official leadership position, this candidate is well respected for his leadership qualities throughout the organization. He is widely known as the ‘go to’ person because he has a reputation for getting the job done and living our values of ‘doing it right the first time every time’ and achieving amazing accomplishments through exceptional teamwork,’” wrote Houston of Betins-Kinnamon.

The Eleanor Cordrey Nursing Excellence Award recognizes nurses who exhibit excellent clinical and critical thinking skills. This nurse shows a strong commitment to the nursing profession and applies patient-family centered care while utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach. This year’s winner, Phyllis Saunders, BSN, RN, cares for each patient as if he or she was a family member, wrote nominator Michaelene Schwartz, who works with Saunders in the Intensive Care Unit.

“[Phyllis] is an ultimate example of excellence and the true spirit of nursing. She strives to excel in her profession while encouraging peers to excel too. She has set an example for all nurses in our unit by displaying excellence both clinically and professionally,” wrote Schwartz of Saunders.

The Constance Bushey Nursing Scholarship Award recognizes nurses who demonstrate a commitment to the nursing profession and lifelong learning. This nurse promotes a nurturing and supportive learning environment for other nurses, team members, and students. This year’s recipient, Julia Bayne, RN, BA, integrates evidence into practice, decisions, and discussions, wrote nominator Jennifer Hargreaves, BA, RN.

“[Julia] took on the task of realigning the policy and code practice at the bedside. This was accomplished by a thorough literature review and interdisciplinary collaboration. This was no easy feat. [Julia] never wavered and stayed committed to the purpose and need for this to be supported,” wrote Hargreaves of Bayne.

The Holly Rader Advanced Practice Nursing Excellence Award recognizes nurses who exhibit excellent clinical skills in the holistic, patient-centered care of patients. This nurse encourages others to strive for excellent outcomes and serves as a constant patient advocate. This year’s winner, Bill Stanton, CRNA, MSN, took charge during an allergic reaction case in the operating room leading to a positive outcome for the patient, wrote nominators Stephan Betins-Kinnamon, MSed, RN, CNOR, and Valarie Osterhout, Anesthesia.

“[Bill] has earned the respect of all of the operating room staff and physicians. I’ve witnessed his calm, deliberate demeanor during trauma cases and he never lets stress or worry get in the way of caring for the patient,” wrote the nominators.

New this year, the Professional Mentor Nursing Award recognizes a nurse that serves as a role model for the nursing profession. This nurse participates in the community, embraces the Beebe Healthcare values, and demonstrates dedication to the profession and organization. This year’s winner, Dianne Bane, RN, ADN, AAS, holds a certificate in gerontology, health and wellness coach training, and has 25 years of nursing experience in multiple areas, from medical-surgical oncology to home health, hospice, and now the Beebe Healthcare Population Health Department’s CAREs program. The CAREs team works in the community with patients who have chronic illnesses and need support managing those illnesses.

“Dianne deals with very challenging and medically complex patients on a daily basis. I have observed her, on countless occasions, interact with these patients and achieve amazing outcomes,” wrote Holly Rader, APRN, FNP. “Dianne is eager to share her knowledge and lifelong experiences to nurses of all generations. Her love for nursing shines through every day at work and in the community, caring for friends, family, or complete strangers.”

The recipients of the Nursing Excellence Awards will go on to be nominated for the Delaware Organization of Nurse Leaders Excellence in Nursing Practice Awards, which will be announced during a ceremony September 24, 2015.

“These awards represent nurses recognizing nurses,” says Steven Rhone, RN, BSN, MS, NE-BC, Vice President of Patient Care Services. “They have allowed us to take time to recognize what our nurses do and that they make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families and caregivers. This is a profession that does not talk about itself, yet has a tremendous impact on the lives of others.”

Beebe Healthcare will celebrate National Nurses Week, May 6-12, with some fun events for all Beebe nurses, including a yogurt bar, a reception to honor the recipients of the 2015 Nursing Excellence Awards, and many prizes and giveaways. The week will conclude with Florence Nightingale’s birthday on Wednesday, May 12. Nightingale is recognized as the founder of modern nursing.
