Beebe Healthcare’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program – the first Certified in Delaware - Earns National Re-certification

Beebe Healthcare’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which has been in existence for more than 30 years, has again been awarded Cardiac Rehabilitation Recertification through the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) until August 31, 2018.

In 2003, Beebe Healthcare’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was the first in Delaware to receive certification through the AACVPR, and remains an active and expanding part of the Medical Center’s patient services.

“We should be very proud of our Cardiac Rehab team here at Beebe,” said Lynn Amey, RN, Executive Director of Cardiac and Vascular Services at Beebe Healthcare. “Its team members provide outstanding care to our cardiac patients, proven through the documentation in the AACVPR recertification.”

Beebe’s cardiac rehabilitation program, which began in 1982, is located in the hospital’s main campus on Savannah Road in Lewes. Its programs are designed to limit the effects of cardiac illness, reduce the risk for sudden death or relapse, control cardiac symptoms, and stabilize, or even improve the patient’s condition, enhancing the patient’s quality of life. Its patients include those who have been diagnosed with any one of a number of cardiovascular illnesses.

Beebe Medical Center’s program is staffed by registered nurses, exercise physiologists, and specially trained professionals and consultants who work with patients by monitoring exercise programs, by offering individual and group education programs and by addressing specific risk factor modifications. The department has a variety of exercise equipment, as well as a telemetry system that allows staff nurses to monitor as many as 12 patients at a time.

Cardiac Rehab is located at the Beebe Health Campus on John J. Williams Highway (Route 24), and shares space in the Medical Arts Building with the Ornish Reversal Program at Beebe Healthcare. The telephone number for both programs is (302) 645-3514.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Department is part of Beebe Medical Center’s Cardiac and Vascular Service Line, which includes Interventional Cardiac Services, Cardiac Surgery, and Diagnostic, Interventional and Surgical Vascular services.

The American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the improvement of clinical practice, promotion of scientific inquiry, and the advancement of education for the benefit of health care professionals and the public in the fields of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. During the certification process, a national board conducts reviews and determines whether essential requirements for standards of care are met.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. About 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year, representing about one in every four deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. According to AACVPR, rehabilitation improves health and quality of life, reduces risk of recurrence, reduces the use of health care resources, and teaches participants how to achieve an optimal level of independence within the community.
