CarFit Safety Program for Seniors Takes Place June 13 at the Beebe Health Campus in Rehoboth Beach

It often seems that the older we get, the more difficult it is to drive. We can’t see out the rear view mirror as well as we used to, and that blind spot seems to be getting bigger. Sometimes, we can’t get the seat comfortable enough and so find ourselves focusing more on the seat than on the road.

CarFit, a free safety program for drivers over the age of 65, is growing in popularity. One session will take place from Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at the Beebe Health Campus on John. J. Williams Highway (Route 24) in Rehoboth Beach. Beebe Healthcare’s Rehabilitation Department and AARP are sponsoring Saturday’s event. CarFit is supported by AARP, The Occupational Therapy Association, The American Automobile Association (AAA) and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA). This is the fifth year that Beebe Healthcare has participated in the program.

The goal of CarFit event is to help older drivers make sure that they are comfortable and have an unobstructed view of what is going on around them so that they are able to drive in a safe manner. Trained professionals will lead drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicles, and recommend any adjustments or adaptations that will enhance their driving. An occupational therapist also will provide information on how drivers can maintain and strengthen their muscles so that they can drive safely.

The program was developed through a collaboration of the American Society on Aging, the AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

To sign up for the free CarFit program, please contact Event Coordinator and Beebe occupational therapist Alice Workman, OTR/L CLT, as organizers would like to have an estimate of how many people will attend. She can be reached by telephone at (302) 645-3100, ext. 2437, and by email at [email protected].
