Register now for free community CPR classes

As part of Beebe Healthcare’s mission to encourage healthy living and prevent illness, educators will be providing free community Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) classes.

CPR is carried out when a person’s heart stops or fails to supply enough oxygen and blood flow to the tissues of the body. Studies have shown that if CPR is started within a few minutes, the person has a better chance of survival without serious damage to the brain or other organs.

The classes will be held at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month at Beebe Healthcare’s Medical Center in Lewes for non-medical members of the community. The class includes facilitation by a trained volunteer and a small reference book. This is not a full-certification CPR class and cards are not issued.

The course teaches adult hands-only CPR, child CPR, infant CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and what to do when someone is choking. The course is a combination of video lecture and hands-on practice with manikins – dummies made specifically for medical education.

“This class will teach the basics of CPR, which will allow more residents to know what to do in a situation where a person may be in cardiac arrest,” said Phyllis Saunders RN, BSN, Clinical Educator at Beebe Healthcare. “Knowing the basics and taking action can help save a person’s life while emergency responders are on their way.”

While the class is free, a reservation is required. Each class will last about two hours. For more information or to reserve your spot, please call (302) 645-3248 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
