Free Skin Cancer Screenings May 5 at Beebe Healthcare’s Tunnell Cancer Center

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common type of all cancer types?  We don’t think of skin cancer as being serious, but one of the most deadly forms of cancer is melanoma.  The major risk factor is ultraviolet light, including direct sunlight and tanning bed light exposure.

The American Cancer Society says the use of sun screens is one defense against harmful sun rays, and those rated higher provide higher levels of protection.  Examination for early detection is another way to protect ourselves.  Melanoma caught in the early stage has a 90.6% survival rate, while those diagnosed in late stages usually do not survive past 5 years.

In recognition of May being Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Beebe Healthcare’s Tunnell Cancer Center is providing free skin cancer screenings.  Local practitioners will be at the center to perform skin examinations and give recommendations for follow up.  A cancer screening nurse navigator will be onsite to educate interested individuals about skin cancer prevention.

The screening date is Monday, May 5, 2014, at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Reservations are necessary for this popular event, and those interested may preregister by calling Debbie Campbell R.N., Cancer Screening Nurse Navigator at (302) 645-3169.
