CarFit Safety Program for Seniors Takes Place May 19 at the Beebe Health Campus in Rehoboth Beach
Submitted by beebemed.org on
It often seems as if the older we get, the more difficult it is to drive. We can’t see out the rear view mirror as well as we used to, and that blind spot seems to be getting bigger. Sometimes, we can’t get the seat comfortable enough and so find ourselves focusing more on the seat than on the road.
CarFit, a free safety program for drivers over the age of 65, is growing in popularity. One session will take place from Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at the Beebe Health Campus on John. J. Williams Highway (Route 24) in Rehoboth Beach. Beebe Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Department is sponsoring Saturday’s event together with AARP and the Moss Rehab Driving Program. This is the third year that Beebe Medical Center has been participating in this program.
The goal of CarFit event is to help older drivers make sure that they are comfortable and have an unobstructed view of what is going on around them so that they are able to drive in a safe manner. Trained professionals will lead drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicles, and recommend any adjustments or adaptations that will enhance their driving. An occupational therapist also will provide information on how drivers can maintain and strengthen their muscles so that they can drive safely.
The program was developed through a collaboration of the American Society on Aging, the American Automobile Club, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
To sign up for the free CarFit program, please contact Event Coordinator and Beebe Medical Center occupational therapist Alice Workman, OTR-L, as organizers would like to have an estimate of how many people will attend. Her telephone number is (302) 645-3100, ext. 2437.
