Arthur W. Perdue Foundation Funds 3D Mammography at Beebe Healthcare’s Georgetown Health Campus
Submitted by Rachel on
The Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Perdue Farms, has committed to a $100,000 grant to help open a second 3D mammography location at the Beebe Health Campus in Georgetown. Patients in Georgetown will be able to have 3D mammograms starting October 1. The Foundation grant will be awarded in two $50,000 installments over two years.
3D Mammography, or breast tomosynthesis, is the latest advance in digital mammography technology. 3D Mammography means earlier detection and fewer unnecessary biopsies for women.
“We are grateful to The Arthur W. Perdue Foundation for its generous support to bring 3D mammography to Georgetown, and are thrilled that their employees will be able to benefit from this new technology conveniently near their work,” said Judy Aliquo, President & CEO, Beebe Medical Foundation. “With Perdue Foundation’s lead support, this advanced technology, now in two locations at Beebe, will help serve the central Sussex County population. We are excited to be able to expand this state-of-the-art technology in Georgetown and look forward to providing it in Millville in the future.”
“Assuring access to quality health care in the communities where our associates live and work is a priority at Perdue and with The Arthur W. Perdue Foundation,” said Kim Nechay, executive director of the Foundation. “We are honored to be a part of Beebe’s tradition of excellence in Georgetown and Sussex County, and know that these machines will help save lives.”
The 3D mammography machine takes multiple images of breast tissue using a low-dose scan. The technology improves the ability to see abnormalities in dense breast tissue, reducing the number of return visits. 3D mammography provides the greatest benefit to women with very dense breasts, who may be more likely to develop breast cancer, and those with a higher risk due to family history. Women who fall into these categories will be selected to have 3D imaging.
“With the addition of this new Hologic Selenia Dimensions breast tomosynthesis machine, Beebe is making a huge advance for our patients,” said Dan Mapes, MPA, RT(N), CRA, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Beebe Healthcare. “Our first machine went into use last October at the Rehoboth Beach Health Campus. This second machine will go into use October 1. Our diagnostic imaging team is excited to provide this new technology for our patients.”
This advance in comprehensive breast care is part of Beebe Healthcare's Breast Health Program, the only one in Delaware to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. It is fitting that Beebe Healthcare will start scheduling patients for this new breast care technology in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“Beebe Healthcare will now be able to offer one of the most comprehensive breast cancer programs in the state,” said Judith Ramirez, Manager of Oncology Population Health. “We are the first in Sussex County to have this technology which will allow our patients to have increased confidence that even early-stage breast cancers will be detected.”
