Vascular Program

Vascular Program

Established in 1990, Beebe Medical Center's Comprehensive Vascular program boasts a fully accredited Vascular Lab, non-invasive vascular testing, and a highly skilled surgical staff.

Most of the patients at the center are treated for atherosclerosis, which is also called hardening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis is caused when deposits of plaque in the arteries constrict or completely block the blood flow, depriving the body of oxygen and nutrients. Plaque may even break off and create a dangerous embolism. Atherosclerosis may cause damage to artery walls, stretching or rupturing them, causing a life-threatening aneurysm. Tests performed at Beebe's lab help detect vascular disease.

Symptoms of vascular disease:

Temporary weakness in an arm or leg Brief blurring or loss of vision in one eye A moment of numbness in an extremity or the face Difficulty speaking or forming words Momentary dizziness or loss of consciousness Pain in the calf or thigh after walking a short distance Changes in skin color, or foot sores that don't heal

Non-invasive vascular testing

Non-invasive peripheral vascular testing allows the physician to make a clinical diagnosis without submitting the patient to costly, uncomfortable, and complicated invasive procedures. Non-invasive vascular studies show the functional aspect of the vessels rather than the structural changes that are indicated by an angiogram.

The Vascular Lab at Beebe Medical Center has been accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories since August 1994. It has state-of-the-art equipment, including color-flow duplex, which is capable of the most sophisticated non-invasive diagnostic procedures available. Tests performed at the lab provide physicians with an in-depth evaluation of the cerebrovascular, peripheral arterial, and venous systems.

Testing is done both for outpatients and inpatients. Most procedures require 30 minutes to perform and are painless. Interpretation of test results is provided by board certified vascular surgeons.

Please allow 24 hours for exam results. Immediate results are available on request.

Patients must be referred to the Beebe Medical Center Vascular Lab by a doctor. Procedures may be scheduled by calling 302-645-3710 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Vascular testing FAQs

Q: Is it painful? A: No. The studies are non-invasive, so there is practically no discomfort.

Q: What are the risks? A: Again, because the studies are non-invasive, the risks are minimal.

Q: How much time is involved? A: Generally, 30 minutes is sufficient time to complete a study. If multiple studies are requested, however, more time is required.

Q: Is it expensive? A: Vascular Lab studies are significantly less costly than related invasive procedures.

Q: What preparation is needed? A: No patient preparation is necessary for most of these tests, which are conducted in a pleasant office atmosphere. Patients who are to have visceral vessel or renal artery scans must not take anything by mouth (not even water) after midnight the night before the test. They may take any regular medication with sips of water.

Q: How do I find out the test results? A: The results of the test will be sent to your doctor.
