Beebe Healthcare Unveils Mobile Health Fleet, Celebrates Federal Support for Expanding Access to Care in Sussex County
Beebe Healthcare unveiled its full mobile health fleet at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Delaware’s Congressional Delegation, marking a major milestone in a multi-year effort to bring care directly to communities across Sussex County.
Through Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) grants totaling more than $3.3 million, Beebe has expanded access to healthcare, harm reduction services, and medical education in one of Delaware’s most rural and underserved regions.
“This mobile health fleet represents more than advanced medical vehicles – it is access, dignity, and hope for residents throughout rural Sussex County who cannot access needed healthcare services,” said David A. Tam, MD, MBA, CPHE, FACHE, President & CEO, Beebe Healthcare. “Thanks to the vision and support of our federal delegation and other philanthropic partners, we can meet people where they are, remove barriers to care, and create healthier communities across Sussex County. Beebe Healthcare stands ready to transform how rural healthcare is delivered.”
Beebe leaders and U.S. Sens. Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester, alongside U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride gathered at Beebe’s Specialty Surgical Hospital on the Abessinio Health Campus in Rehoboth Beach for a short ceremony, which was followed by a ribbon cutting and fleet tour.
The new additions to the mobile fleet include:
- 28-foot Winnebago – fully customized mobile health clinic with an exam room and triage/registration/phlebotomy station, plus a “wet bath” for wound care.
- 24-foot Extended Sprinter Van – exam room and triage station for smaller, hard-to-access locations.
- 21-foot Sprinter Van – support vehicle for staff and supplies during outreach events.
These vehicles complement Beebe’s flagship Community Mobile Health Clinic and allow the team to reach areas where the larger RV cannot go. In a county spanning 950 square miles, where many residents face transportation barriers, housing instability, and limited access to traditional healthcare facilities, mobile healthcare has become a lifeline.
“Beebe is leading the way in addressing these challenges through innovative, community-based solutions, but could not be possible without the support of Delaware’s Congressional Delegation, federal funding, and community support,” said Bill Chasanov, DO, MBA, Chief Health Systems Design Officer. “By integrating primary care, behavioral health, harm reduction, and social services into one model, we’re meeting people where they are and addressing the root causes of health disparities in ways that are not only innovative but deeply compassionate and responsive to the needs of Sussex County.”
Impact by the Numbers
- 376 community engagements and 7,000+ individual contacts since program launch.
- 1,000+ provider visits and 2,000+ nurse visits delivered in non-traditional settings.
- 1,300+ Naloxone kits distributed with training to prevent overdose deaths.
- Comprehensive point-of-care testing: HIV, Hepatitis C, lipid panels, A1c, pregnancy, flu/COVID/strep, and more.
- Family Medicine Residency Practice projected to deliver 11,000+ primary care appointments over 3 years in a shortage area.
- All four members of the first graduating class (June 2026) will remain in Sussex County.
“It’s more important today than ever for health care providers to find effective ways to meet the people where they are when they need care most,” said Sen. Coons. “I'm proud to have secured federal investment in Beebe’s mobile units to help them meet the needs of Delaware’s most vulnerable, provide care, and save lives.”
“I am thrilled that we have been able to deliver over $3 million for Beebe Healthcare, which is a critical partner in providing care to all who call Sussex County home,” said Sen. Blunt Rochester, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. “From expanding Beebe’s mobile health clinic to supporting their work to combat substance use disorders, the federal investments secured by the delegation will help meet patients where they are and create a healthier Sussex County.”
"Investing in quality health care across Delaware—especially in our rural communities—remains a top priority for our congressional delegation,” said Rep. McBride. “Beebe’s Mobile Health Fleet was created by listening directly to community needs and made possible by a strong public-private partnership. This fleet will help Beebe continue to bring essential services—from everyday care and behavioral health to harm-reduction support and social services—directly to residents, delivering care with the hope and dignity every person deserves. These community-driven efforts are building a healthier Sussex County, and I’m proud to support their efforts as we work to make affordable, accessible care a reality for all Delawareans.”
