Increasing Patient Access in the Community

Beebe Healthcare, began employing physicians in the 1980’s in response to a strong community need. This need evolved into the development of Beebe Physician Network, Inc., in March, 1999, enabling the Medical Center to improve physician billing and to track the financial performance of individual physicians.

The network began with three specialist physicians, to include two Pulmonary specialists and one Infectious Disease specialist. In 2006, the Hospitalist Program was developed, with the objective of providing improved service to the community physicians and to better control inpatient ancillary service utilization. By 2008, the Hospitalist program totaled 10 full time Hospitalists.

By year 2009, further expansion of the network occurred with the additional of an Interventional Cardiologist, three Gastroenterologists, a Hand Surgeon, one full time, and one part time, Primary Care physician, one Walk-In Center physician, and two Neonatology Nurse Practitioners. The following year added three more Primary Care physicians (Internal Medicine), another full time Walk-In Care physician, a locum tenens Neurologist for Ed unassigned call coverage, and a part time Dermatologist to fill community needs.

Subsequent years of 2011 and 2012 saw the addition of another Gastroenterology, a Primary Care physician specializing in family medicine, and the locum tenens Neurologist accepted a full-time position as a Neuro-Hospitalist. Three primary care practices consolidated into one primary care office location. The interventional cardiologist office closed due to the provider relocating, but was replaced with a recruited independent physician. The hospitalist team increased to a total of 14. The Observation Unit was formed and staffed by 2 mid-level providers and a full-time dermatologist was hired in place of the part-time dermatologist, who retired from practice. These years also saw the addition of a full-time surgical oncologist and the formation of the Cardiac Surgery department, staffed with two Cardiothoracic Surgeons. After the closure of the Millville Emergency Room Center, Beebe Physician Network reopened the Walk-In Clinic in Millville.

In March of 2014, the network applied for a "doing business as" certification and is now known as Beebe Medical Group. Beebe Medical Group, the employed physician entity under Beebe Healthcare, is today comprised of more than 20 different specialties in nearly 50 locations throughout Sussex County. These specialties include Primary Care (both Family Practice and Internal Medicine), Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric and Adult Neurology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Surgical Oncology, Dermatology, Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders, Infectious Diseases, General Surgery, Urology, Palliative Care, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Bariatric Surgery, Breast Surgery, Walk-In Services and the Hospitalist department. In total, Beebe Medical Group currently employs more than 200 physicians and advanced practice providers, and is growing rapidly to serve the expanding needs of Sussex County.

The expectation of Beebe Healthcare and Beebe Medical Group is that increased patient access in the community and better coordination of preventive care and treatment of chronic conditions will improve patient outcomes and community health status. Both organizations understand the critical role of continuing to work together, with the focus on "Patient Centered Medical Care."
