Clara M. Higgins, DO

Clara Higgins, DO, FACOS, is a general surgeon at Beebe Healthcare. She performs both inpatient and outpatient-based surgical procedures, with focus on urgent colonoscopies and endoscopies. Dr. Higgins also places port-a-caths for cancer patients whose plan of care calls for chemotherapy. She is employed by Beebe Medical Group and practices as part of the Beebe General Surgery Group, located in Lewes.

Education, Training, and Credentialing
Dr. Higgins is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she also completed a clinical internship and residency, with concentration on general surgery. She was appointed Chief Surgical Resident for the last year of her training. Dr. Higgins is board certified in osteopathic general surgery and is a Fellow and active member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. Additionally, she is a member of the American Osteopathic Association.

Earlier Work Experiences
Prior to joining Beebe Healthcare, Dr. Higgins worked at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital in Tennessee, serving as the organization’s only general surgeon. Earlier in her career, while in private practice in Lewes, Delaware, she established her initial affiliation with Beebe Healthcare. During that time, with focus on breast cancer care, Dr. Higgins treated nearly 17,000 patients in Sussex County. She has also worked in private practice with connection to multiple hospitals in the Philadelphia area, and served as Director of Medical Education at Parkview Hospital in Philadelphia.

Personal Notes
In her free time, Dr. Higgins enjoys playing pickleball with her friends and neighbors, and working in her garden. She and her wife, Kelli, along with their dog, Lucy Lou, and their cat, Ricky Bobby, are thrilled to be back in Delaware after living in Tennessee for six years.
