At Beebe Healthcare

James Spellman, MD, is a Surgical Oncologist and specializes in advanced surgical treatment for cancer. He performs procedures at the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus and sees patients at Beebe Surgical Oncology. He is employed by Beebe Medical Group and is a member of Beebe Healthcare's Medical Staff. 

“As a surgical oncologist, my practice is unlike many others because we are working closely with cancer patients, so it is more than just an occupation – it’s who we are,” Dr. Spellman says.

Self-referral skin screening clinic

Dr. Spellman holds a skin cancer screening clinic every other Thursday from 1-4 p.m. for baseline skin checks, and moles that may or may not have changed. If you wish to make an appointment for a skin screening, please call 302-644-0964.

Education, Training, and Credentialing

Dr. Spellman is a fellowship trained surgical oncologist. He is board certified in general surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of The Society of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Spellman earned his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his residency at Stamford Hospital and his fellowship at the Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago.

He is an accomplished surgeon, researcher and author of professional articles in medical journals and books. He has served as the Delaware State Chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) Cancer Liaison. He also is a member of the Executive Board of Directors, Delaware Cancer Consortium.

Earlier Work Experiences

Dr. Spellman has dedicated his career to the advancement of the surgical oncology field. He has performed procedures at Beebe since 1996 and has help build a program that was one of the first in the region to offer advanced procedures so that many patients did not have to travel for care. He pathed the way for Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, Stereotactic Biopsy, and Sentinel Node Biopsy to be performed at Beebe. He has spearheaded numerous accreditations for programs developed at Beebe. Prior to coming to Delaware, Dr. Spellman was a member of the Department of Surgical Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute under the direction of Nicholas Petrelli, MD.

Personal Notes

Dr. Spellman enjoys outdoor activities, including cycling skiing, climbing, camping, and scuba diving. He is also a voracious reader. He and his family love the national parks system and often vacation to places where they can hike as a family. In addition, he focuses on staying healthy by eating well, exercising regularly, resting, and fasting occasionally.
