John W. Tyson, MD

At Beebe Healthcare
John Tyson, MD, FACS, is a board certified general surgeon at Beebe Healthcare. He performs a broad range of general surgical procedures, including laparoscopic colectomies for patients who have been diagnosed with colon cancer. Dr. Tyson advocates for minimally invasive approaches to surgical care, knowing that patients tend to experience less complications and less pain post-operatively. Additionally, he collaborates closely with Beebe’s Gastroenterology team to promote the importance of screening and early detection of colon cancer, and also supports Beebe’s new Family Medicine Residency program, which launched in 2023. Dr. Tyson is employed by Beebe Medical Group and sees patients at Beebe General Surgery located in Lewes.

Education, Training, and Credentialing
Dr. Tyson earned his medical degree at the Penn State College of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency training, both concentrating on general surgery, at the Naval Hospital in San Diego.

Earlier Work Experiences
Dr. Tyson served in the Navy for 14 years before working at Florida State University College of Medicine as both Clerkship Director and an Associate Professor. Prior to joining Beebe, he served as an Acute Care/Trauma surgeon at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut, where he was also involved in surgical residency training. He was also part of the residency teaching staff at Yale University. Through his various experiences training medical students, Dr. Tyson developed a true passion for teaching.

Personal Notes
In his free time, Dr. Tyson enjoys traveling, spending time on the beach, biking local trails, and tending to his family’s foster dogs. He is an avid reader and can almost always be found with a good book in hand. He is married with five children and two grandchildren.
