EDITORIAL: Philanthropy key to Beebe’s success

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, Peggy and Randall Rollins have a warm place in their hearts for Lewes, specifically, and for eastern Sussex County generally. The most recent manifestation of their love came last week when they gave Beebe Healthcare a huge boost with the announcement that their Ma-Ran Foundation will be donating $10 million toward the hospital’s $180 million expansion plans.

They have not forgotten their Lewes roots: Peggy as a Lewes High School graduate and one-time employee at Beebe Hospital; Randall as an employee of the Sussex radio stations which, along with a car dealership in Lewes, were at the beginning of the many successful commercial ventures owned by his father, O. Wayne Rollins, and uncle, John Rollins. Those varied enterprises eventually blossomed, spread nationally, and grew into a multi-billion dollar conglomerate.

In the best tradition of those who have profited greatly from America’s free-enterprise system, members of the Rollins family have contributed generously to making their communities better places to live and work for people from all walks of life. Such contributions build the stability of our society. Free enterprise thrives best on a stable platform.

Beebe Healthcare, long a progressive medical, health and economic force for the region, serves one of the most rapidly growing areas of the nation. In addition to low taxes, beautiful beaches and parks, and a temperate climate, the availability of excellent medical care plays an important role in retirees’ decisions to relocate here.

Through the decades, Beebe has continuously reached to expand its services so residents and visitors could have their healthcare needs addressed without driving to surrounding metropolitan areas. In return, Beebe has enjoyed strong financial support from benefactors like the Rollins family, and so many others at all levels, who understand the importance of such facilities to a growing community. Broad-based private support from a committed, enlightened and grateful community is the reason why Beebe Healthcare can continue to serve so well.

PROJECT UPDATE [JUNE 15, 2018]: Due to anticipated changes in our community’s use of healthcare facilities and services, we have re-evaluated the scope of our expansion and decided to enhance and expand access to advanced medical technologies and outpatient services rather than proceeding with the construction of additional inpatient rooms on the Lewes Campus.
