Get to Know: Jude Johnson-Shupe, Social Services
“As a social worker, I am able to work in a variety of settings, focusing on collaborative change,” said Jude Johnson-Shupe, MSW, of Beebe Oncology’s social services team. “I am able to empower, advocate, motivate, connect, and encourage resilience for our patients.”
Jude Johnson-Shupe earned her master’s degree in social work from Delaware State University. Prior to graduating, she and her husband relocated to Lewes and she found Beebe Healthcare.
“In my role as an oncology social worker, I am able to help patients, families, and caregivers deal with the experience of facing cancer,” Jude said. “I assist with the psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual issues that people have to face with a cancer diagnosis.”
Jude often works with patients and families to find resources, both within Beebe and in the community. She provides support and education when it comes to dealing with transitions, decision-making, navigating cultural issues, and communicating with loved ones and medical care teams.
“When someone is diagnosed with any cancer, there are a lot of questions and concerns. It’s not just how am I going to survive this, but it is also how can we pay for treatment, how will I get to treatment, how is this going to affect my work, my children, my life … a lot goes into planning before treatment may even start,” Jude said. “It gives me satisfaction to be able to help our patients during some of the hardest decisions of their lives.”
