What To Look For in a Childbirth Class

Different childbirth classes cater to a variety of labor and delivery needs. Here are some differences between common childbirth classes:

  1. Lamaze is the most well-known childbirth education class—focuses on keeping you educated and informed. It teaches breathing techniques, coping strategies for pain, and how to stay comfortable during labor.
  2. Hypnobirthing is a childbirth class that teaches you how to use self-hypnosis and visualization during labor. It promotes that acute pain does not have to be a part of labor.

Learn about the different childbirth techniques and choose the one that fits you.

An Educational Experience

Childbirth classes should help ease the anxiety of giving birth. You will become more aware of signs of labor such as vaginal discharge color change, frequent contractions, and your water breaking. Also, your instructor will teach you ways to relieve pain including massage, breathing techniques, and distractions.

Being informed gives you a boost of confidence in yourself and your body’s ability to deliver. You should plan to attend class late in your second or early in your third trimester. Going too early before your due date give you the opportunity to forget what you’ve learned.

In addition to childbirth classes, Beebe also offers FREE breastfeeding classes.

A Place to Share Your Concerns and Opinion

Find a childbirth class in which you are free to discuss your fears and concerns with the instructor and your peers. This environment of openness creates a space where couples can vent their frustrations, and receive advice from one another. Classes are typically offered in hospitals or physicians’ offices. Ask your primary care physician, OB/GYN, or family and friends for referrals.
