Two Beebe Healthcare team members are preparing to travel to Kenya this November to help provide medical care, behavioral health, and mental health services to thousands of patients in underserved communities.

Wendi M. Schirvar, PhD, LP, NCSP, Clinical Psychologist, Behavioral Health Faculty and Core Faculty with Graduate Medical Education, and Anne M. Caswell, MD, a nocturnist with Graduate Medical Education (GME), will participate in the Compassionate Health Initiatives (CHI) Medical Mission to Nyeri, Kenya, in November 2026. Kenya has the largest mental health needs of any country in Africa.

The participation of two of Beebe's faculty members provides a valuable opportunity to bring experiences from the mission back to Beebe’s Graduate Medical Education program.

The Compassionate Health Initiatives (CHI) Medical Mission 2026 is a multidisciplinary humanitarian effort delivering free, high-quality medical and surgical care to underserved communities in Nyeri County, Kenya. Partnering with Outspan Global University Hospital, a volunteer roster of U.S. and international healthcare professionals will conduct outpatient consultations, behavioral health services, surgical interventions, and community health outreach.

The mission expects to serve 2,500 to 3,000 patients. Services include general outpatient consultations, specialized surgeries, pediatric care, OB/GYN services, mental health counseling assessment and treatment, and pharmacy dispensaries.

Operations are based at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri. Pharmaceuticals and clinical supplies will be locally sourced to support continuity in the region.

More than 50 volunteers across a range of disciplines will participate. These include physicians and surgeons in multiple specialties, nurses and advanced practice clinicians, surgical and pharmacy professionals, clinical psychologists, and administrative, logistics, chaplaincy and non-medical volunteers.

An independent fundraiser supporting the effort will be held Thursday, Oct. 8 from 4-7 p.m. at Vino Del Mar on Savannah Road in Lewes.

Compassionate Health Initiatives is a nonprofit organization based in Delaware with a commitment to providing compassionate and sustainable healthcare to underserved communities around the world. The organization believes access to quality medical care is a fundamental human right, regardless of geography or economic status.
