A Gift in Memory of Mom
Beebe Hospitalist Dr. Katie Johnson (Allen) and her husband Bennett Allen recently joined the Beebe Medical Foundation’s 1916 Club and are proud supporters of the I Believe in Beebe Campaign. They made their five year gift pledge in memory of Katie’s mom, Tami
Johnson, who passed away at the age of 54 from glioblastoma. Katie’s dad, Steve Johnson, still lives in Harrisburg, Pa., and spends time at his condo in Dewey Beach, a place that was always very special to him and his late wife.
Dr. Johnson graduated from Temple University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following this she moved to Dallas, Texas, to complete her residency at Dallas Methodist Hospital and then worked at Baylor University Medical Center for five years. She and Bennett met in Texas, his home state.
Dr. Johnson’s parents had a dream to one day retire and move to Dewey Beach but unfortunately, this could not come to pass. Her parents had visited there since they were both teenagers. Dr. Johnson and her husband decided to make this dream come true for their own young family, so took the leap and moved from Dallas to Lewes in 2017. Dr. Johnson took a position as a Beebe hospitalist, one that she loves because the work is so varied and patient-focused. She will be the medical director of the palliative care program, effective October 28. Bennett is one of the head brewers for the recently opened Revelation Craft Brewing in Rehoboth Beach. They have two daughters, ages two and four.
When asked why they decided to make such a significant gift to Beebe, Dr. Johnson said, “Our hospital is so vital to our community. It is more than a place I work. It is the place our family and friends seek care. We are happy to support the ongoing efforts to be the best place for healthcare.”
