Lightening the Load of Motherhood

We talked with pediatrician Stacey Fox, MD, of Beacon Pediatrics to get her take on balancing life as a working mom—Dr. Fox herself is a mother of two.

When asked how she handles work and family, Dr. Fox says that balance is key. “Balance requires constant minor adjustments, or you end up tipping too much to one side. I would say I think about how to handle choices throughout every day. One day I focus more on work, but I make up for it the next day by spending more time with my family.”

There's no such thing as the perfect mommy role. “I think setting reasonable small goals and forgiving yourself when you fall short is key. Having a baby is hard! Sleep deprivation can make you feel sick, foggy, and slow,” Dr. Fox shares. “Plus, there’s the worrying and trying to handle things you’ve never had to before. It’s important to have a lot of support whenever possible and to be gentle with yourself."

Being a mom is one of the most rewarding, yet challenging, feats for any woman. It’s important to set aside time for yourself. Also, having a strong support system with whom you can share your concerns is necessary for your mental health.

Parenting with a Side of Community

Parenting is a nonstop whirlwind of “don’t do that” or “inside voice, please!” Add these parenting plays to your mommy (or daddy) guidebook to help you stay connected.

1. Visit the park.
This is a great way for your kids to get their energy out and for you to engage with other parents.

2. Pick a workout buddy.
Set aside time to go to the gym together for a spin or yoga class, or simply push strollers together as you talk and walk.

3. Go online.
Find a parenting support forum that you can turn to. You can also check out our free Women's Health Journal here.

4. Start a group or join one!
Maybe it’s a book club or just a time for you and other moms to have a glass of wine and dish about your day.
