Men’s Health Month: Why Scheduling That Appointment Often Starts With You

June is Men’s Health Month, and it’s a time to remember that seeing a doctor on a regular basis is important for all of us.

But, let’s be real.

When someone in the household needs medical attention, the person most likely to do some research, create a Facebook post asking for personal recommendations, and make the phone call to actually schedule the appointment is … you. The wife. The mom, The mastermind of the calendar. The household CEO and partner-in-chief.

And it’s not just our imagination or a stereotype. Research backs this up.

Women are often described as the “power users of healthcare,” meaning they’re more likely to schedule appointments, manage chronic conditions, track symptoms, and stay on top of preventive care. They also tend to have more interactions with the healthcare system.

Other articles even refer to women as the “chief medical officers” of their families, with mothers handling the majority of healthcare decesions and logistics.

So when it comes to men’s health, research says you’re likely the one who notices when something seems off, brings up that lingering cough or skipped checkup, and helps turn “I’ve been meaning to…” into an actual appointment on the calendar.

Somehow, some way, you get all of the things done. You know it, he knows, it, and we know it!

At the same time, we realize that all families, couples, and situations are unique. Perhaps the process of finding healthcare and making decisions is more of an independent or shared responsibility within your household. The important thing to remember is that health, wellness, and seeking healthcare promptly when it is needed, is important for every member of the family.
