The R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education at Beebe Healthcare is proud to announce the official launch of its Internal Medicine Residency. The organization will welcome its first cohort of residents in July 2027, under the leadership of Katie Johnson, DO, Founding Program Director.

“We are building a residency that will make a positive difference for those who train at Beebe, and who will ultimately be embedded in our culture and community,” said Dr. Johnson. “The introduction of our Internal Medicine Residency gives us an opportunity to cultivate the next generation of skilled, compassionate internal medicine physicians who will serve Sussex County. As is the case with all of our residencies, our goal is to ensure physicians who come here to learn have such an exceptional experience that they are inspired to stay on board with us long-term, once their training is complete.”

In the coming months, eight physicians will be recruited to be part of Beebe’s inaugural class of internal medicine residents, upon graduation from their respective medical schools. Resident physicians will work in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, with opportunities to build skills as general internal medicine physicians while gaining exposure in a wide range of subspecialty areas. This comprehensive approach to clinical training aims to prepare resident physicians for post-graduate fellowship opportunities and ultimately, the transition from medical student to independent physicians.

“Beebe is committed to advancing our options for graduate medical education and as a result, is becoming recognized as an ideal destination for state-of-the-art medical training,” said Tanya Ray, MS, Director of the R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education. “We are dedicated to building comprehensive, robust training curriculums that provide new physicians opportunities to grow both personally and professionally, while also encouraging them to consider practicing in Sussex County long-term.”

Beebe’s Internal Medicine Residency is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. It is the fourth residency to be introduced by the R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education over the past four years, with Family Medicine, Pharmacy, and Transitional Year residencies in place and actively growing.

“Beebe’s residencies are designed to optimize clinical excellence, patient-centered care, leadership development, and workforce growth across the health system,” said Paul Sierzenski, MD, MSHQS, CPE, FACEP, Senior Vice President and Chief Physician Executive at Beebe. “As we continue to introduce new residencies and fellowship opportunities, we are focused on the direct needs of our community and the integration of best practices to give new physicians even more reasons to designate Beebe as their top choice for clinical training. We are very proud of how much we have accomplished in a short period of time, and are looking forward to welcoming our internal medicine resident physicians to Sussex County next summer.”
