Cancer Taught Me: Sandy Mintz’s Story

I was diagnosed with Stage 3B breast cancer on August 16, 2013. I couldn’t cry and was determined not to let the cancer get me down! I like to say, ‘Don’t let the turkeys get you down,’ referring to situations and people who may upset you! Further testing proved it was not in my lungs, bones, and bloodstream.

It was in my lymph nodes. I had a radical mastectomy with reconstruction at the end of September. Eighteen lymph nodes were removed with cancer found in 15. I had chemo every three weeks for six months, followed by radiation daily for five weeks, five days a week, which added to my struggle and my vulnerability—staying free of infection and germs, especially during chemo! I lost my hair, but it grew back thick and curly! I was very involved in my medical care.

By October 2014, I was cancer free. My friends say I was an inspiration and did it with grace. I truly do not know how I would feel if my cancer returned, but I hope I would be positive!
