Dr. Paul Cowan: I Believe in Beebe because We Care for the Community

Emergency Department physicians often see patients at their worst moments on their worst days. They arrive with injuries, illnesses, and often they are in a life-threatening situation.

For about 10 years, Dr. Paul Cowan and his team of emergency physicians saw patients in the South Coastal area (south of the Indian River Inlet Bridge to include towns of Bethany Beach, Ocean View, Millville, and others), however the summer emergency center there was closed permanently many years ago.

“Beebe has always wanted to return to the area, but it was a matter of timing and financing,” said Rick Schaffner, COO and Executive Vice President. “With the issues in the stock market and the economy, we have not been able to fully commit to providing emergency services … until now.”

Beebe will break ground this fall on a new South Coastal Health Campus to be located on Route 17 south of Millville. The new campus will include a freestanding Emergency Department (meaning an emergency room not connected to a hospital) and a second location for Beebe’s fully accredited cancer center.

Dr. Cowan and his team are exciting about the new opportunity. “It’s something we have always wanted to do, so we are ready to get it moving and continue to serve our community there.”

Dr. Cowan said the freestanding Emergency Department will be able to handle the majority of emergencies they see. Some emergency calls will be sent directly to Beebe’s medical center in Lewes for critical care. Other patients might be stabilized at the South Coastal Health Campus before being transferred to Lewes or another facility.

“I believe in Beebe because we care for the community,” said Dr. Cowan. “We aim to provide healthcare and services close to where our community lives and that’s important.”
