Beebe Healthcare’s Family Medicine Residency Matches with Four Doctors on Match Day
For the third straight March, Beebe Healthcare’s Family Medicine Residency matched with four physicians who had recently finished medical school.
Match Day was March 21 this year, and the Residency now has 12 physicians, with four in each of the training years 1, 2, and 3 of their academic curriculum, which is an exciting milestone as the program and faculty grow. The resident physicians will take part in a three-year academic curriculum at Beebe, gaining exposure and hands-on experience in a wide range of clinical areas – from the emergency and operating rooms to countless specialty areas such as OB-GYN, pediatrics, cardiology, ophthalmology, and orthopaedics.
“This is our third Match Day, and it would not be possible without the support of Beebe leadership, faculty, and philanthropic community,” said Jeffrey Hawtof, MD, Director of Medical Education at the R. Randall Rollins Center for Medical Education. “Welcome to Beebe and Sussex County, to the doctors who will be excitingly ripping open an envelope or email with their match in just a few minutes.”
The matches are kept an utmost secret until noon of Match Day. It was Joyce Robert, MD, founding program director of Beebe’s Family Medicine Residency, who introduced the four matches.
First was Javed Akhtar, MD, who is from Magnolia, and attended medical school at the Dow Medical School in Pakistan. He also obtained his Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky and sees patients at Beebe Walk-In Care Centers. He enjoys hiking, kayaking, and cycling.
Second was Fiza Fatima, MD, of Lahore, Pakistan, who earned her medical degree at Shalamar Medical and Dental College. Her hobbies are cooking, knitting, Urdu literature and dramas, and designing clothes.
Another familiar face was announced third. William Kang, DO, of Edison, New Jersey, earned his medical degree at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also did a fourth-year rotation at Beebe as a medical student. His hobbies are rock climbing, Tai Chi, and cooking.
Last but certainly not least is Pranav Tyyala, MD, of Vijayawada, India. He completed medical school at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and his hobbies are basketball, chess, cycling, and gardening.
More Celebrations on Friday
Match Day is always a celebration, and the Family Residency team had more announcements than just the new resident physicians. They also welcomed the next rotation of fourth-year medical students who will be training at Beebe. Additionally, the Residency celebrated its continued accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
“This reflects Beebe’s compliance with residency requirements and commitment to training high-quality physicians for Sussex County,” said Tanya Ray, MS, Administrative Director of Graduate Medical Education. “This significant achievement underscores the excellence of our program and the dedication of our team.”
During Ray’s speech, the crowd at the Lewes Campus also celebrated the one-year anniversary of breaking ground at the new facility on the Long Neck campus by announcing that practice will officially open in early June. A public event will be held prior to the grand opening.
This new practice at the Long Neck Health Center will give current and future resident physicians more space to serve a culturally diverse patient population in an area that continues to grow.
“In July, we are so excited to welcome our latest class of resident physicians to Beebe and a brand-new practice,” said Dr. Robert. “These ceremonies are truly special and celebrate all of the hard work and dedication that our team puts in to bring the best doctors to Sussex County!”
