Beebe Healthcare’s Specialty Surgical Hospital Named Top Rural Hospital by Leapfrog

For the second consecutive year, Beebe Healthcare’s Specialty Surgical Hospital has been named a Leapfrog Top Rural Hospital. This award is presented to an elite group of hospitals across the United States that exemplify the highest quality and safety standards in the patient care environment. 

There were 156 Top Hospitals honored by Leapfrog, with Beebe being one of the Top 16 rural designations and the only in Delaware or Eastern Shore of Maryland. 

“Every member of our surgical services team has played an important role as we have worked to optimize our quality and safety protocols, with consistent processes and collaborative systems in place to guide how we care for every patient who requires surgery,” said Troy Schmit, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer at Beebe. “We are incredibly proud to receive this designation from Leapfrog for the second straight year. We want our patients and our community to know that Beebe is a hospital they can rely on for comprehensive care over the course of a lifetime, and that our commitment to quality and safety will be evident when they choose us for their care.”

Quality and safety have always been a top organizational priority at Beebe, and that commitment was integrated seamlessly when the organization opened its Specialty Surgical Hospital in 2022. The four-story facility, located in Rehoboth Beach on the Abessinio Health Campus, has created a “destination for surgical care” in Sussex County, with space to accommodate up to 20 operative procedures per day. 

Surgeons have access to robotic technology and other state-of-the-art equipment that optimizes the patient’s journey of care before, during, and after surgical procedures. The majority of the cases performed at the Specialty Surgical Hospital are bariatrics, orthopedic, and breast procedures.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization that is viewed as a “watchdog” of the healthcare industry. It uses publicly available data as well as self-reported information from an annual hospital survey that Beebe submits to Leapfrog. The organization says it focuses on patient safety in hospitals and healthcare systems. Its research is conducted to educate and inform consumers about hospitals that deliver the highest value care and that are taking the steps necessary to ensure a safe and compliant environment of care.
