Beebe Healthcare has a new resource available for patients undergoing treatment for cancer – Amma is a portable scalp cooling device that can reduce hair loss. The ultimate goal is to help patients preserve their hair so they can look and feel like themselves as they undergo lifesaving care.

Cooler Heads designed the Amma device to be used before, during, and after chemotherapy, cooling the scalp to 65 degrees, which helps limit the impact of the medication on hair follicles. It is the only device of its kind cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and its portability is what sets it apart from other similar products that have emerged in recent years.

“Cancer is a difficult journey, and we know from our experience in working with patients that loss of hair, as a result of chemotherapy, can be very emotional,” said Maurice Winkfield, Executive Director of Beebe Oncology and Ancillary Services. “The Amma device offers hope, and a solution. It preserves hair follicles, but most importantly, it allows a patient to go through this journey, while maintaining their sense of self.”

Amma was designed by a breast cancer survivor, in light of her own cancer journey and challenges with hair loss. She took it upon herself to design a newer, better, device, accounting for her own needs of the needs of other cancer patients that she met in the midst of her treatment.

The Amma device costs significantly less than other cold cap devices and is packaged in a tote bag with educational tools and helpful accessories. The Amma device is available for use at Beebe’s Tunnell Cancer Center and South Coastal Cancer Center. Patients can work with their care team to purchase the cap needed for the treatment, which could be covered by insurance or other financial support.
