Healthgrades recognizes Beebe Healthcare with the Orthopaedic Surgery Excellence Award for 10 Years in a Row (2007-2016)

Beebe is one of Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Spine Surgery™ in 2016

Beebe Healthcare is a recipient of the Healthgrades Orthopaedic Surgery Excellence Award™ for 10 Years in a Row (2007-2016), and is the only recipient in Delaware and on The Delmarva Peninsula.

Healthgrades also named Beebe Healthcare one of Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Spine Surgery™ in 2016, and among the Top 10 in the Nation for Overall Orthopaedic Services for 10 Years in a Row (2007-2016).

Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions in order to find the right doctor, the right hospital, announced the awards October 20 in its Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation, which evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

“These Healthgrades ratings, based on patient outcomes that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have collected, are a credit to everyone involved in caring for orthopaedic patients at Beebe Healthcare,” said Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE, President and CEO of Beebe Healthcare. “They reflect the quality of the orthopaedic care that we provide, and of the commitment to our patients by our Board members, our physicians, our clinical staff, and all of our employees. Most importantly, these ratings demonstrate to the communities we serve that Beebe is among the very best of all hospitals across the country and that outstanding orthopaedic care is truly close to their homes.”

The new report highlights the disparity in hospital performance for specific conditions and procedures both nationally and regionally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2012 through 2014, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5 stars as a group, on average 222,392 lives could potentially have been saved and 166,086 complications could potentially have been avoided.*

In the 2016 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared hospitals with statistically better than expected performance (5-stars), as a group, to those with statistically worse than expected performance (1-star), as a group, and found:

  • Patients having Total Knee Replacement in hospitals with 5-stars have, on average 64.9% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with 1-star.*
  • Patients having Spinal Fusion in hospitals with 5-stars have, on average: • 63.4% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with 1-star.*

From 2012-2014, patients having Total Knee Replacement in hospitals receiving 1-star are, on average 2.9 times more likely to experience one or more complications than if they were treated in hospitals with 5-stars and patients having Spinal Fusion 2.7 times more likely.*

Beebe received 5-star ratings for Total Knee Replacement for 13 Years in a Row (2004-2016) and for Spinal Fusion Surgery for 7 Years in a Row (2010-2016).

Beebe Healthcare has also achieved 5-star ratings in Treatment of Heart Failure, Pneumonia, Sepsis and Gallbladder Removal Procedures. The complete Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation with detailed cohort-specific outcomes data, hospital-specific quality achievements, and detailed study methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.

“The Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation reveals striking disparities in quality at the local level, and underscores why it is vital for consumers to understand outcomes performance at alternative hospitals for specific conditions and procedures,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer for Healthgrades.
