Karen Barbosa, DO, FACOS, is a fellowship-trained oncoplastic breast surgeon who works at the Beebe Center for Breast Health. Dr. Barbosa is a board certified surgeon who offers the latest, most advanced techniques in oncoplastic breast surgery. She is committed to the delivery of state-of-the-art care and the availability of a broad palette of surgical treatment options for patients to consider and choose from.

Dr. Barbosa is passionate about education and makes it a priority to get to know her patients, answer their questions, and point them toward the right resources for achieving and maintaining good breast health – from routine mammograms to risk assessment and genetic testing. She is proud to be part of a team of specialists who are committed to the achievement of optimized long-term outcomes for every patient, in a culture that values and embraces personalized, holistic care.

Education, Training, and Credentialing
Dr. Barbosa is a graduate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She went on to pursue a rotational internship at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by surgical residency training at Peninsula Hospital Center in New York, where she was appointed Chief Surgical Resident. Dr. Barbosa’s clinical training concluded with a breast oncology fellowship at the world-renown Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Barbosa has done extensive oncoplastic training internationally.

She is Hidden Scar Certified and as a part of the teaching faculty for the American Society of Breast Surgeons, she is active in training programs facilitated nationwide to teach surgeons how to optimize cosmetic outcomes for cancer patients.

Earlier Work Experiences
Prior to joining Beebe Healthcare, Dr. Barbosa served as Medical Director of the Delaware Breast Cancer Program at TidalHealth. Before that, she was Medical Director of the Clark Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Maryland’s Shore Regional Health Center. Throughout the course of her career, she has become recognized as a reputable lecturer and speaker, and has been published in numerous prestigious medical journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Personal Notes
Outside of work, Dr. Barbosa enjoys swimming, kayaking, photography, and gardening. She is passionate about art and music, and attended the “Fame” School in New York City as a voice major. She is married and has two dogs and one cat.
