Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe Healthcare Hosts Annual Girl Scout Outreach Program
The Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe Healthcare recently hosted a nursing exploration workshop for local Girl Scout troops. The one-day educational event was created in 2013 by Morgan Mast, MSN, RN, CNE, a faculty member at the school, as a way to promote the nursing profession to young girls in the area. Due to its success, the School of Nursing has committed to continuing this annual tradition. The day consisted of various nursing skills stations, where the teens were able to practice skills as if they were nurses. The use of the school’s new high-technological laboratories and skills equipment aided in the simulation of typical nursing scenarios. Additional faculty and staff, Ginny Rickards, MEd, BSN, RN, CCRN, Academic and Admissions Advisor; and Susan Trone, MSN, RN, a faculty member; as well as School of Nursing senior students assisted with the stations and presentations. Skills stations included proper hand-washing techniques, early recognition of stroke symptoms, and how to apply dressings. Patient safety was also stressed at each station. “My goal is to promote the profession of nursing in a positive way by connecting with a young audience in our community,” says Mast. “Many of the girls expressed interest in the field of nursing and it is my hope that when they start to think about a career choice, they will remember the positive experience they had at our workshop and choose to pursue nursing.”
The newly expanded School of Nursing offers modernized classrooms and state-of-the-art simulation labs. Student enrollment will increase incrementally over the next few years. The School of Nursing’s two-year program offers a comprehensive
nursing education that provides education in basic nursing concepts, advanced technology, and critical care nursing. The curriculum provides optimal, hands-on clinical experience due to the proximity of the medical center. Upon completion of the program, graduates are well prepared for licensure and entry level nursing practice.
Articulation agreements with the University of Delaware and Wilmington University facilitate the student’s opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Prerequisite college courses are required prior to enrollment in the Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing program.
